I’m walking 7k steps a day this May to support Autistic Australians

Hi everyone

I wanted to share something important.

I recently learnt that a lot of people still don’t really know what autism is. Some people think it’s something you can catch, something bad and wrong, something you grow out of or that everyone has a little bit of it.

It’s funny, but it’s also important that people understand what autism actually is because a lot of people have autism and some are like me and you might not notice.

It doesnt take long to look up what autism is. Some people understand my autism better as aspergers.

People with autism have brains that are made in the same place and in the same way as everyone else’s, but they just work differently.

That’s called being neurodivergent and it’s different for every person.

I love my autism. I learn things at different times, in different ways and understand things differently but different isnt bad.

I have had a great memory since I was little, I have been able to multiply numbers and read since I was three. This is because my brains works very fast and I can learn things quickly.

Sometimes I need to work harder on other things because of this too. I get anxiety, I cant pick what I want to eat unless its the same foods, I get frustrated easily when I am trying to concentrate and cant and I also understand things very literally which can confuse me. I understand a lot differently to other people too.

But I work on doing all of these things in a way that works for me. They will always be there but so will my skills that I love.

Lots of people get anxiety and frustrated. I always learn differently. I see things differently. I understand things differently. Its ok for me to be different. Everyone is different but not everyone has autism and is as great at video games as I am. Its my fast brain.

Why am I walking for Autism?

There are still lots of misunderstandings about autism and many people don’t have the support they need while learning to live in a world that isn’t always autism-friendly.

Did you know that around 70% of autistic people in Australia experience mental health challenges?

That’s why we’re walking 7,000 steps a day in May to fundraise for Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia).

If you can, please support us by donating or join our team to help raise awareness of what autism really is 💙

Your donation will help support autistic people to live their best lives. It can help families get earlier diagnosis, provide autism-specific schooling, support research, and help create more inclusive, autism-friendly environments.

Please support our Walk for Autism.

Thank you so much.
