The Sollom's are walking 7k steps a day this May tk raise awareness and help support people with autism!
Hi everyone
I wanted to share something important.
I recently learnt that a lot of people still don’t really know what autism is. Some people think it’s something you can catch, something you grow out of or that everyone has a little bit of it.
It’s funny, but it’s also important that people understand what autism actually is because a lot of people have autism and some are like me and you might not notice.
Everyone spends time looking things up like games and friends on Facebook.
It take the same time to look up what autism is too.
People with autism have brains that are made in the same place, at the same time and in the same way as everyone else’s, but they just work differently.
That’s called being neurodivergent and it’s different for every person.
I love my autism.
My brain works really fast. I’ve always found numbers and things like that easy to learn and have been able to read since I was little. I also have a really good memory.
Creative thinking is something I’ve had to work really hard on and this year I wrote an 8 page story.
I also still struggle with things like anxiety and getting overwhelmed sometimes.
I have a different way of looking at the world and I see things differently but that doesn’t make it wrong, it just makes it different and our family all learn from eachother.
I know I’ll always be working on some things but lots of people work on the same things sometimes. And some of the things my brain can do are really good, so I feel really lucky.
Not all families are like mine and not all people with autism are like me. I’m really lucky to live in a family that accept me and the differences that come with autism.
There are still lots of misunderstandings about autism and many people don’t have the support they need while learning to live in a world that isn’t always autism-friendly.
Did you know that around 70% of autistic people in Australia experience mental health challenges?
That’s why we’re walking 7,000 steps a day in May to fundraise for Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia).
If you can, please support us by donating or join our team to help raise awareness of what autism really is 💙
Your donation will help support autistic people to live their best lives. It can help families get earlier diagnosis, provide autism-specific schooling, support research, and help create more inclusive, autism-friendly environments.
Please support our Walk for Autism.
Thank you so much.
