I'm walking 7k steps a day this May to support Autistic Australians

Hi friends,

Next month, I’ll be walking every day in May to raise money for Aspect. They are a non-profit organisation that provides services and support for Autistic people around Australia.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 21 and ASD at 23. I’ve been in therapy for over 10 years, and throughout that time I showed so many signs of neurodiversity, such as struggling with emotional regulation, socialising, sensory overload, and executive function, to name a few. However, it always came down to having low self-esteem, being a bit shy, or being an “emotional teenager”. The reality was I was deeply struggling every day, and only in the last 18 months has everything begun to finally make sense. 

My story is just one of many as a late-diagnosed/high-masking Autistic person. The 7k steps represent 70% of Autistic people who experience mental health problems. I wouldn’t change anything that's happened in my life, but I know it would have turned out incredibly different if I’d known then what I know now. 

“Funds raised can help Autistic people and their families access earlier diagnosis, provide Autism-specific schooling for children on the Autism spectrum, support research, and help create inclusive, Autism-friendly environments.”
