I'm walking for Chayse

This year we are taking part in the Walk for autism from 31 March to 7 April. We are challenging ourselves to walk 10,000 steps a day for 8 days from while raising much-needed funds to support people on the autism spectrum.

We are walking to raise awareness about autism for 8 year old Chayse. During Chayse’s first years of school he was seen as a naughty, difficult and disobedient kid. It wasn’t until he was diagnosed with autism at age 6 that it became apparent he wasn’t being ‘naughty’ yet trying to cope in a world that wasn’t making much sense to him and that sometimes made him feel scared, frustrated and alone. Things that may seem like small insignificant tasks, to Chayse can be very stressful and unpleasant. This amplified when communicating these feelings comes with its own level of difficulty. Once the people around Chayse were more aware of what he was going through it became easier to understand and help. Last year Chayse was also diagnosed with ADHD and an intellectual learning disability. Awareness and understanding can help Chayse. If the world was more aware, it would be a less scarier place for someone with autism.

People on the spectrum see, hear, feel and experience the world differently. Simply trying to cope with the everyday can cause stress and anxiety and prevent many people from fully participating in the world around them.
By taking part in Walk for autism, we will step closer to a world where every person on the autism spectrum has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.
Walking is always better together!
