Day 2 - A different perspective

In our household this has been a rather challenging week and today - yet again finding the time to go and do my walks was tough.. However I took the time today to take a walk with a little guy (10y/old) with Autism, ADHD, OCD and ODD. This little guy walked nearly 4,000 steps with me and we talked about WHY I am doing this fundraiser.
Asking him what awareness means, why it's important and what it can do for kids like him - was a really nice way to do some of my steps. He said 'I think awareness means understanding and maybe if people understood more about kids like me then if they saw someone who is struggling - instead of thinking they are naughty maybe they might see if they can help them' and then when I asked him what he wished people knew about kids like him? He said 'I wish they knew that Autism can be really cool, we have really creative brains, think differently and sometimes know things that other people don't'.
It was a really lovely time spent with him and with having absolutely zero phone reception - it made that connection more tangible, no screens, just two people having a chat about acceptance, empathy and support! It certainly helped my headspace with the week I've had!!
To do the rest of my steps - I did my aqua therapy fro my knee injury, sadly though my watch didn't count my steps properly at all (around 3-4000 in 1/2hr, counted as 600 ish) so I was still rather under!
Tonight, exhausted, needing sleep - I was tempted to roll them into tomorrow knowing realistically I had done them all anyway - but - parents of special needs kids don't get to just 'roll it' over to another day, they have to keep on keeping on and I figured welll whats a casual FIVE laps of our 4wd track at 10pm compared with that hey?
As tired as I am and as much as I really didn't want to do that tonight, walking under the gorgeous gum trees with an incredibly full of stars sky, was a great end to a tough one!

Day 1 - Daily life with Autism often doesn't go to plan... neither did my day!

I am feeling extremely humbled and grateful right now - I am 2/3's of the way toward my fundraising goal on my first day! I am so honoured and grateful to the beautiful people who have sponsored me today thank you very much.

I committed myself to not walking 7,000 steps per day - but to do 10,000. I did this because every single day, people living with, supporting and loving those with Autism don't have the option to just do the standard, they have to do more and be more and it is NOT an easy feat.. so what is a little extra 3,000 steps on that?

Some days are going to be more of a challenge then others and today was one of those - life is life, everyone has stuff going on of course but today was a bit of a pearler.. Just had the unfortunate side effect of being a day where that extra 3,000 was a bit of a stretch! I had only managed a tiny 1400 steps by 2pm!!

Soooo my solution - was to take little Frankie and walk laps around our 30 acres until I got there. It only took 3 laps for me to be close but have run out of time (kids and all that) and I promised myself I would GET it done before going to bed tonight.

Well - as I'm sitting here typing my thanks and my update - my steps are at 10,152 for the day and I have a runaway turkey to find! So clocked it and tomorrows day will just have to start with a triple lap of our property to be safe I guess?

Thank you again to the incredible people who have supported me and please feel free to share my page for me?

Love and Gratitude xx

I'm walking 10k steps a day this May to support Autistic Australians

I’ve stepped up to Walk for Autism. Please show your support as I walk my own brilliant way for Autistic Australians and their families!

Did you know? Because the world is not autism-friendly, 70% of Autistic people in Australia experience mental health issues.

That's why I'm walking 10k steps a day in May to fundraise for Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia). Can you please support me?

Your donation will help deliver services that support Autistic people to live their best life.

Funds raised can help Autistic people and their families access earlier diagnosis, provide autism-specific schooling for children on the autism spectrum, support research and help create inclusive, autism-friendly environments.

Please support my Walk for Autism and donate now. Thank you so much!
