Our beautiful son Hudson was diagnosed in 2022 with ADHD and Autism (AuDHD). His diagnosis has helped us learn and understand the complexities of the two neurodevelopmental condition. We have learned that some social situations and the simplest of instructions or tasks, which may seem straightforward to a neurotypical person, can be incredibly confronting and challenging for him.

The process of obtaining the correct diagnosis has felt like an eternity. It has required immense patience as we waited for appointments, assessments and ongoing therapy. There have been times when the journey has been overwhelming, and the feeling of helplessness has been incredibly difficult.

Amidst these challenges, we have been fortunate to receive so much support from family, friends, educators, and a team of experts. This network has ensured that we are giving Hudson every opportunity to succeed in his own unique way. The journey can feel isolating at times, but knowing there are others who understand and support us makes a significant difference.

That's why I'm walking 7k a day in May to fundraise for Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), to hopefully be able to support in some way those in need knowing what I know now as Hudson’s Mum.

Funds raised can help Autistic people and their families access earlier diagnosis, provide autism-specific schooling for children on the autism spectrum, support research and help create inclusive, autism-friendly environments.

WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism is a developmental condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others, and experiences their environment. It is a lifelong disability and it is often referred as a hidden disability, as it may not be immediately apparent to others as symptoms .

Autistic individuals each have their own distinct set of abilities, challenges, preferences, and personalities, much like everyone else but theirs are magnified and harder to manage. Some may face significant challenges in daily life, including increased stress levels, a sense of isolation due to difficulties in social interaction and heightened sensory sensitivities. These difficulties may lead to mental health issues, highlighting the need for support.

Thankfully, therapy support, especially in the early years, as well as community inclusion and participation can greatly improve the lives of those on the autism spectrum.

Fostering community inclusion and participation enriches both the lives of Autistic individuals and the broader community. In addition to participating in this year's Walk for Autism, we strongly encourage you to take some time to learn more about autism and make changes to your behaviours and environment to help support and celebrate Autistic people. You can find resources on Aspect's website.
