What is the Walk for autism 10,000 step challenge?

Walk for autism is a virtual event that challenges you (as an individual, with your family or in a team) to walk 10,000 steps a day for eight days or sixteen days.

This year’s event is taking place from Saturday 25 March. Event finish dates are subject to which 'Challenge' you wish to do!

8 Day Challenge, 10K steps a day - Runs from Saturday 25 March to Saturday 1 April 2023  (inclusive) 

16 Day - Double Your Challenge, 10K steps a day - Runs from Saturday 25 March to Sunday 9 April 2023  (inclusive)

What is the Workplace Team Challenge?

The Walk for autism Workplace Team Challenge is a great staff engagement activity designed so companies can sign up a team and challenge their staff to get active and fundraise in support of those on the autism spectrum. 

It's an easy, fun and rewarding way to boost staff activity levels and shows your company's commitment to corporate social responsibility by helping to create a more autism-friendly world.

How do I register for Walk for autism?

Click the 'Register Now' button at the top of the page and complete the registration form. 

Are there any costs to register?

The 10,000 steps challenge is free! There are no registration costs, but we encourage everyone to make the first donation to their fundraising page. This helps to kick-start your fundraising efforts and motivates others to start supporting you.

What fundraising rewards are up for grabs?

Achieve the fundraising targets below on your individual fundraising page – and you could win!

Fundraise $50 - Unlock your iconic Walk for autism t-shirt that you can wear with pride and pedometer (if ordered and while stock lasts) 

Fundraise $150 - You’ll go into the draw to win one of two $150 Active & Wellness vouchers

Fundraise $250 - You’ll go into the draw to win the finest pair of Apple AirPods Max in standout green, valued at $899!

Where do I walk?

There’s no set event location for the Walk for autism 10,000 step challenge. That means you can walk anywhere in Australia, at any time, in any place – whatever takes your fancy. Just remember to be careful, stay hydrated and have fun along the way!

I've raised $50 - why didn’t I get a t-shirt and pedometer?

When you registered you had the option of to receive a Walk for autism t-shirt and pedometer after raising $50. You also had the choice to not receive this merchandise. If you have changed your mind please contact our Walking Buddies on: 1800 AUTISM (288 476) walk@autismspectrum.org.au This merchandise is only available while stocks last.

How do I create or join a team?

Motivate friends, family or colleagues to take on the Walk for autism challenge with you. Follow the 'team' registration pathway and you'll get the option to ‘create team’ (and let others know the name) or search and join an existing team. You can also do this at a later time on your fundraising dashboard.

Do I have to walk from my event dates?

Depending on your challenge selection, our main event periods run from:

8 Day Challenge - Runs from Saturday 25 March to Saturday 1 April 2023  (inclusive) 

16 Day Challenge - Runs from Saturday 25 March to Sunday 9 April 2023  (inclusive) 

But you can choose to walk any time that suits you! 

There's a minimum $500 to raise on my page, can I change my fundraising target?

Although we are set at minimum $500, we do understand this goal isn’t reachable for everyone.

You can change your minimum fundraising target by:

  • Logging into your Fundraising page
  • Click onto ‘Dashboard’
  • Select the ‘Edit My Page’ tab and change the ‘fundraising target’ to the minimum amount you would like.

What if I'm not able to do 10,000 steps a day?

If you are unable to do 10,000 steps daily for the 8-day or 16-day challenge, then you can nominate to your supporters how many steps you would like to do.

What if my Organisation wants to have multiple teams?

Our Walking Buddies are here to help you with such questions! Should you wish to have multiple teams under one company, please email walk@autismspectrum.org.au or call 1800 288 476 so we can assist.

Can I choose to do the 8 Day or 16 Day Challenge, even if I'm within a Team?

Absolutely! You are still registering as an 'Individual', just under the 'Team' banner with other members.

As an individual within a Team, you can definitely choose your preferred challenge!

How do I count and log my steps?

It’s easy! If you’ve requested one, you can wear your Walk for autism pedometer to count your steps. Otherwise, you can use a personal fitness tracker like a Fitbit. Regardless of how you count, remember to keep track and log your steps on your fundraising dashboard by going to your "My Fitness Activity" tab. You can log your steps manually or link your Fitbit and Strava by downloading the app and following the prompts. If you link to Fitbit and Strava your steps could take up to 24 hours to appear. Note: We'll be resetting your practice steps on 25 March at the start of our challenge period.

Where does my fundraising go?  

Funds raised may go to our world class research program, adult community services, autism friendly equipment and necessities for our schools, as well as early childhood support. Click through to learn more about Your Impact.

How do I register for an education sector class merchandise pack?

We have a limited number of Walk for autism class packs on offer. To take advantage Team Captains need to register their team and be one of the first to achieve the team fundraising targets noted below. Up for grabs are class packs including special merchandise and autism friendly information.

Pre-School / Early Learning / Infants / Primary Pack - Team to Fundraise $100 

Secondary / Tertiary Pack - Team to Fundraise $250

What is a Walkathon?

Walkathons are annual events that take place at our nine autism-specific Aspect Schools. Participation is for our school communities only.

Can I participate in both Walk for autism 10,000 steps challenge and a Walkathon?

If you’re part of one of our school communities, then we’d love for you to jump on board for both events! You can choose how you’d like to be involved when you register and set up your online fundraising page.

Are the donations tax deductible?

Yes any donation over $2 are tax deductible. When you make an online donation you will receive a tax receipt for your donation.
